Exchange error “Unable to execute the task. Reason: The discovery mailbox, a hidden default mailbox that is required to search mailboxes, can’t be found. It may have been inadvertently deleted. This mailbox must be re-created before you can search mailboxes”

When you try to use the Discovery Search Mailbox from the Exchange Control Panel (ECP) I get the following error:

Multi-Mailbox Search

“Unable to execute the task. Reason: The discovery mailbox, a hidden default mailbox that is required to search mailboxes, can’t be found. It may have been inadvertently deleted. This mailbox must be re-created before you can search mailboxes”

The reason is probably you have deleted “Discovery Mailbox” on Exchange 2010.

For the fix this issue,

You can run the following cmdlet  on Exchange Management Shell and Re-Run the Multi-Mailbox Search;

Enable-Mailbox -Arbitration -DomainController <FQDN of root global catalog server> -Identity “SystemMailbox{e0dc1c29-89c3-4034-b678-e6c29d823ed9}”

Enable-Mailbox

If you got error on cmdlet and you couldn’t find “SystemMailbox{e0dc1c29-89c3-4034-b678-e6c29d823ed9}” on Adsi Edit User Container,

SystemMailbox

You have to re-create the Discovery system mailbox with using Setup.com /PrepareAd switch.

After that, you will use ECP Multi-Mailbox Search.
